What is our Approach to Teaching Learners with SEND?

At Ridgefield Primary School we ensure that all our pupils are equally valued by having equal access to a broad and balanced curriculum which is differentiated to meet individual needs and abilities. We have effective management systems and procedures for SEND, taking into account the current code of practice (2014). We have successful communication between teachers, children with SEND, parents of children with SEND and outside agencies such as the Educational Psychologist or Speech and Language therapist.


We acknowledge and whenever possible draw on the parents’ knowledge and expertise in relation to their own child. Through our termly Learning Conferences the children are encouraged to take an increasingly active role in setting targets for their own learning. These targets are shared with parents during Parent’s Evenings, termly reviews or for SEN support children through structured conversations, where you will have more time and opportunity to talk at length with your child’s teacher about your concerns.


We are committed to developing the knowledge and skills of all staff to manage the challenges of the range of needs in our school, and to ensure that all support is of high quality. We have an effective review cycle that allows us to monitor, review and plan for next steps. This takes place half termly in conjunction with the Head Teacher and SENCO as part of our pupil progress meetings.


We ensure that consideration of SEND crosses all curriculum areas and all aspects of teaching and learning.
