The Ridgefield Reading Festival took place over the week of World Book Day. The Festival is a week-long series of activities which focus the children on the wonder of books, stories and reading.
The year Mrs. Trew, our English co-ordinator, had booked a visit from Steve Smallman (who turned out to be disappointingly normal-sized).
Steve is an illustrator and author of award-winning books including ‘Batmouse’, ‘Big Bad Owl’ and ‘Poo in the Zoo’. He kept the children spell-bound with demonstrations of his illustrations whilst also talking to them about the writing process.
The children also took part in lots of book-based activities such as ‘scavenger hunts’, creating new book covers for their favourite books, writing character descriptions as well as dressing up as their favourite characters for World Book Day itself.
The school also ran a Book Fair through Scholastic Books. These fairs not only offer children the chance to buy a new book – usually at discounted prices – but also reward the school in money to spend on new books for the library!
