On Friday 18th March, the Mayor will be coming to school to open the ground for our large scale sculpture…symbolically planting the seed for the tree and the entire ‘We are Ridgefield’ project. See the tree develop and grow here from concept to end product.
Mrs Collison worked during the holidays on a scale model of Big Tree. She made it out of straws. The real sculpture will be made out of metal tubing and planted right into the ground outside the front of the school.
Today we met with Carter Builders. They have agreed to help us with the foundations for the tree sculpture. We are deciding whether to plant it straight into the ground or whether to build it on a plinth. Obviously safety is our top concern, so we want it high enough so that the adventurous amongst us can’t climb on Big Tree! We’re sure Carter Builders will do a great job.
This week we have all been writing origin myths for Big Tree. You can read our Myths Here.
Big Tree is coming along…this just in…a sneak peak at one of the limbs!
Mrs Collison spent her Easter Holidays, not reading on a beach somewhere exotic, but right here in Cambridge working very hard on our sculpture!
This is during it’s final stages before being brought to School and ‘planted’ outside the office in our front garden. A picture will be coming soon of it standing proud and as the leaves are added we will, of course, keep updating you!
Finally, our tree is complete. The final ceremony took place at our Summer Fair at the beginning of July, with the children and parents singing ‘We are Ridgefield’ and an emotional moment for Mrs Collison, who’s hard work has most definately paid off!
